What is Access Point?

Definition

An access point is the device that broadcasts a WiFi network and bridges wireless clients onto the wired network. In venue deployments, access points are typically ceiling or wall mounted, powered over Ethernet, and managed centrally by a controller that pushes configuration, applies policy and reports on client activity.

Access point versus router

A consumer router combines several roles: internet gateway, firewall, switch and wireless radio. A venue access point does one job, serving wireless clients, and leaves routing and firewalling to dedicated equipment. That separation is why venue networks scale. You add radios where coverage is needed without adding gateways, and you manage all of them as one system. It is also why a single consumer router struggles in a real venue: one radio in one corner, with no way to hand a device off to a nearer one.

Placement determines performance

Most venue WiFi complaints are placement problems rather than hardware problems. Access points belong out in the open, near the middle of the area they serve, not tucked behind a bar or inside a metal cupboard. Adjacent units must use non-overlapping channels, because two radios shouting on the same channel halve each other's throughput. Enough units for capacity matters as much as coverage: a full room of phones is a capacity problem, and one distant access point with a strong signal will still perform badly. Placement, channel plan and count are the three variables worth getting right before buying anything faster.

Role in guest WiFi marketing

For a captive portal, the access point is the enforcement point. It holds unauthenticated devices in a restricted state, redirects their first request to the portal, and releases them once the controller or RADIUS server authorises the session. It also generates the client association and disassociation events behind presence and dwell reporting. How many access points does a venue need?

It depends on floor area, construction materials and simultaneous device count rather than on a single rule. Dense seating with many phones needs more units for capacity even when one would technically cover the space.

Do I need new access points to run a captive portal?

Usually not, if you already run Omada or UniFi hardware. Both support external captive portal integration, so a portal platform can be connected to the controller you already have.
