What is Footfall Analytics?

Definition

Footfall analytics is the measurement of visitor volume and patterns in a physical space. WiFi-based footfall infers counts from devices detected by access points, producing hourly and daily curves, new versus returning splits, and zone comparisons that help venues staff correctly and evaluate campaigns against real visit data.

How WiFi-derived footfall is built

Access points observe devices in range and record detection events. Those events are filtered to remove very short passes and very long stays, deduplicated to approximate one device per person, and aggregated into counts per hour, day and zone. Layered on top are derived measures: returning visitors, visit frequency, and the ratio of people who connect to the portal against people merely detected. None of this counts people directly. It counts devices, and it converts them to an estimate using assumptions you should know and be able to state.

What it is genuinely good for

Footfall analytics earns its place on operational questions. Staffing schedules built on measured hourly curves beat schedules built on memory. Opening hours can be tested against actual arrival patterns rather than habit. A promotion can be evaluated against the same weekday in prior weeks instead of against a feeling. And in a multi-site business, comparing sites on the same methodology surfaces which locations are genuinely underperforming rather than merely smaller.

Honest limitations

Device-based counting systematically miscounts. Groups sharing one phone are undercounted; people carrying a phone and a laptop are overcounted; staff and neighbours pollute the sample; and MAC randomisation inflates unique counts unless the platform actively compensates. Treat the absolute number as an index rather than a census. Where an exact count matters, for example for licensing or capacity compliance, use a purpose-built counting system and keep WiFi analytics for trends and segmentation.

Footfall Analytics — common questions

How accurate is WiFi footfall counting?

Accurate enough for trends, not for absolute counts. It is best used to compare periods, zones and sites measured the same way, rather than as a headcount you would rely on for compliance.

Is passive device detection a privacy concern?

It can be. Detection collects device identifiers without any guest interaction, so disclose it in your privacy notice, aggregate rather than store raw identifiers, and set a short retention period. Local rules differ, so check what applies to you.
