Cambium cnPilot captive portal and External Hotspot

Cambium access points can run a guest portal on the access point or hand guests to an external page. Here is how both work, from Cambium’s own guides, including the cnMaestro cloud limit that catches people out.

Not supported by VoqadoWiFi. Written from Cambium Networks documentation read on 7 October 2026.

Does VoqadoWiFi work with Cambium?
No. VoqadoWiFi does not support Cambium today. Cambium Enterprise Wi-Fi access points have built in guest access with Clickthrough, RADIUS, LDAP or local guest accounts, and an External Hotspot that sends guests to an External Page URL, with a whitelist and session and inactivity timeouts.

What Cambium Enterprise Wi-Fi is and who runs it

Cambium Networks makes the cnPilot and Enterprise Wi-Fi access points, which can be managed standalone or through cnMaestro, available as a cloud service or on premises. Guest access is configured on the WLAN under Guest Access, either on the access point (Internal) or with an External Hotspot.

How the External Hotspot hands guests to your page

With an External Hotspot you enter the External Page URL. The access point redirects new guests there with parameters that include ga_ap_mac (the access point), ga_cmac (the guest device), ga_srvr (the access point’s IP address), ga_nas_id, ga_Qv (an encoded query string used internally) and, when present, ga_orig_url, the page the guest wanted.

Cambium’s integration guide shows a login form whose action is /cgi-bin/hotspot_login.cgi on the access point, so it is the guest browser that tells the access point to open the network. With the Clickthrough access policy, the guest only has to accept the terms.

There is one important limit. A Cambium staff answer on the Cambium community says posting directly from a web server is supported when the access point is managed through cnMaestro On-Premises, and does not work when devices are managed by the cloud version of cnMaestro.

Guest access options Cambium Networks documents
OptionWhat it doesSource
ClickthroughGuests get access after accepting terms and conditions, with no authentication.Vendor docs
RADIUSGuests enter a username and password checked by a RADIUS server.Vendor docs
Local Guest AccountA username and password configured on the device.Vendor docs
LDAPCredentials checked against an LDAP server.Vendor docs
External HotspotGuests are redirected to an External Page URL you host.Vendor docs
WhitelistDestinations reachable before the guest is authorized.Vendor docs

Clickthrough on the access point is the default access policy and already covers a simple terms page. The External Hotspot only adds value if the page you host does something more, such as keeping a guest list.

Timeouts and returning guests

Session Timeout sets how long a guest may stay online before authenticating again: 60 to 2592000 seconds, default 28800 (8 hours). Inactivity Timeout disconnects associated devices that send no data, default 1800 seconds.

MAC Authentication Fallback is for sites where guest access is only used when MAC authentication fails, so known devices skip the portal.

VoqadoWiFi and Cambium cnPilot and Enterprise Wi-Fi: the honest status

VoqadoWiFi does not support Cambium cnPilot and Enterprise Wi-Fi today. VoqadoWiFi works with two controller platforms: TP-Link Omada and Ubiquiti UniFi. On those, the controller sends each new guest to the VoqadoWiFi login page as an external captive portal, and VoqadoWiFi asks the controller to open the network once the guest signs in.

This page describes what Cambium Networks documents, so you can decide what to do with the hardware you have. It is not a setup guide for VoqadoWiFi, and nothing on it means VoqadoWiFi works with Cambium cnPilot and Enterprise Wi-Fi.

What the vendor calls the external portalGuest Access, External Hotspot
How access is granted, as documentedForm post from the guest browser. After the guest signs in, the guest browser posts a small form back to the access point or router, which then opens the network.

The browser post back to the access point is documented, but the cnMaestro cloud limit means it would only work for some Cambium sites, and it would need testing on Cambium hardware. VoqadoWiFi has not built it, and there is no date.

If you are choosing hardware now, the TP-Link Omada setup guide and the Ubiquiti UniFi setup guide show exactly what VoqadoWiFi needs. If you are keeping your current hardware, its own options above work today without us.

Cambium cnPilot and Enterprise Wi-Fi questions

Does Cambium support an external captive portal?
Yes. Guest Access has an External Hotspot with an External Page URL, and access policies of Clickthrough, RADIUS, LDAP or local guest accounts.
Does external post through work with cnMaestro Cloud?
A Cambium staff answer says no: posting directly from a web server works when the AP is managed through cnMaestro On-Premises, not the cloud version.
What is the default Cambium guest session timeout?
28800 seconds (8 hours), configurable from 60 to 2592000 seconds. The inactivity timeout defaults to 1800 seconds.
Does VoqadoWiFi work with Cambium?
Not today. VoqadoWiFi supports TP-Link Omada and Ubiquiti UniFi. Leave your email below to hear if that changes.
