Plan for AI / Note 44

Ask AI to summarize a WiFi report

A report-summary prompt that keeps source numbers, missing data and recommendations separate.

First, the useful part

Start with the decision.

A summary can be fluent and still misread a metric. Before using AI for a WiFi report, provide the definitions and require the output to distinguish observations from suggested explanations. Work with approved aggregate data whenever it is sufficient.

Put it into practice

Three moves to make.

  1. Prepare the source

Include the reporting window, metric dictionary and relevant context notes. Remove guest identifiers and secrets that are unrelated to the summary task.

  2. Constrain the answer

Ask for quoted source numbers, explicit missing data and a short list of questions. Tell the assistant not to infer revenue or unique people from login totals.

  3. Reconcile the output

Check each number and comparison against the source. Have the report owner approve conclusions before sharing them as business findings.

An illustrative example

What it could look like.

Prompt starter: “Summarize this report in three observations and three questions. Preserve the source definitions. Label hypotheses as hypotheses. If a denominator is missing, do not calculate a rate. Do not claim that a campaign caused a change.”

Before the next move

The final check.

The summary passes when every number can be traced to the supplied report and every recommendation is visibly separated from the observations.

The detail that matters

Do not use an AI-generated explanation as evidence that the explanation is true.

Can an AI summary fill gaps in my analytics?

It can identify missing information and suggest questions. It cannot turn unavailable measurements into observed facts.
