Measure honestly / Note 27

Keep test activity out of WiFi reports

A small exclusion register for separating staff checks and demonstrations from guest observations.

First, the useful part

Start with the decision.

Testing is necessary, but its events can distort a small venue’s early reports. Establish how test activity will be identified before the pilot begins. Keep the original observations and document the exclusion rule instead of silently editing results.

Put it into practice

Three moves to make.

  1. Register the tests

Record the approved test window and non-sensitive identifiers needed by the reporting owner. Use designated test contacts where the system supports them.

  2. Apply one rule

Define which events are excluded and why. Apply the same rule to each period you compare, and keep a record of any change to the rule.

  3. Report the difference

Show the raw total and adjusted total when the difference is material. Explain which measures could not be cleaned reliably rather than presenting them as guest-only.

An illustrative example

What it could look like.

If a team completes 20 demonstration logins during a week with 50 total completions, an unqualified total can mislead. Record the demonstration window and exclude only activity that can actually be identified under the agreed rule.

Before the next move

The final check.

Ask a second reviewer to reproduce the adjusted count. Keep an audit note that explains the exclusion without retaining unnecessary personal data.

The detail that matters

Do not remove genuine guest failures because they make the pilot look less successful.

Should test records be deleted immediately?

Follow your approved handling process. For reporting, a documented exclusion can preserve evidence while keeping test activity separate from guest results.
