Measure honestly / Note 25

Define your guest WiFi metrics

A shared dictionary for keeping connections, contacts, subscriptions and visits distinct.

First, the useful part

Start with the decision.

A dashboard label is not a complete definition. Teams can use the same word for different events and reach conflicting conclusions. Write down what each measure counts before using it in a report or a public claim.

Put it into practice

Three moves to make.

  1. Name the event

Describe what has actually happened: a page loaded, a login completed, an address was recorded or a marketing choice was made. Keep these as separate events.

  2. State the counting rule

Record the time window, duplicate handling and exclusions. Ask how repeat devices, shared addresses and test records affect the result.

  3. Name the limitation

Explain what the measure cannot establish. A login count alone does not identify total footfall, unique people, revenue or permission to send a campaign.

An illustrative example

What it could look like.

A dictionary entry could define “completed guest logins” as the completion event reported by the configured system during the selected period. It should separately explain whether repeated sessions are counted and whether test activity is excluded.

Before the next move

The final check.

Have two people calculate or interpret the same example. Different answers expose a definition that needs more work.

The detail that matters

Do not rename device activity as unique customers without evidence that supports the identity relationship.

Are contacts and subscribers the same measure?

No. A recorded contact detail and a valid marketing subscription represent different facts and should be reported separately.
