Aruba Instant On captive portal: what it can do today
Instant On has its own guest portal and an External type for portals hosted elsewhere. This guide explains both from HPE’s own documentation, and is clear about where VoqadoWiFi stands.
Not supported by VoqadoWiFi. Written from HPE Aruba Networking documentation read on 7 October 2026.
What Instant On is and who runs it
Aruba Instant On is a product line from HPE Aruba Networking with its own management portal and its own documentation, separate from Aruba Instant and Aruba Central. The guest network settings, including the guest portal, are configured there rather than on a controller you host.
That matters for guest WiFi because every portal option is a setting on the network in Instant On, not something you install. Whatever the portal can do is what HPE exposes on that settings page, which is why this guide sticks to that page.
Does Instant On support an external captive portal?
Yes, in its own terms. The guest portal has two types, Internal and External. External points guests at a portal you host somewhere else, and HPE’s page sets it up together with RADIUS: it says that in the RADIUS Profile list you must select an existing RADIUS profile or create a new one.
The same page offers Guest portal acknowledgment, where the external portal must return the predefined string InstantOn.Acknowledge to grant the guest access to the internet. In plain terms: the portal tells Instant On that the guest is done, and Instant On opens the network.
Read together, those two statements leave an open question that only a live Instant On account can settle: whether the acknowledgment path still needs a working RADIUS server behind it. Until that is tested, plan for an External portal on Instant On to involve RADIUS.
Guest WiFi you can run on Aruba Instant On today
| Option | What it does | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Internal guest portal | A portal you customize inside Instant On: logo or image, background colour, welcome message, terms and conditions text, agreement text and an accept button with a redirect URL. | Vendor docs |
| External guest portal with RADIUS | Guests are sent to a portal you host, with a RADIUS profile selected on the network. | Vendor docs |
| Guest portal acknowledgment | The external portal returns InstantOn.Acknowledge to grant access. | Vendor docs |
| Allowed Destinations | Facebook, X, LinkedIn, Weibo and WeChat can bypass the guest portal. | Vendor docs |
| Allowed Domains | Domains you add are reachable before the guest accepts the portal. | Vendor docs |
For a cafe or shop that only needs terms and an accept button, the Internal portal already does that with no extra system. It does not give you a guest list you own; that is the part an external portal adds.
Before you set up an external portal on Instant On
Put the portal host in Allowed Domains. Before a guest accepts, the network only lets them reach allowed destinations, so a portal that is not listed cannot load on the phone it is meant for.
Decide where RADIUS comes from before you start. If your portal provider does not run RADIUS, the External type may not be usable on your account; test it on one network first.
VoqadoWiFi and Aruba Instant On: the honest status
VoqadoWiFi does not support Aruba Instant On today. VoqadoWiFi works with two controller platforms: TP-Link Omada and Ubiquiti UniFi. On those, the controller sends each new guest to the VoqadoWiFi login page as an external captive portal, and VoqadoWiFi asks the controller to open the network once the guest signs in.
This page describes what HPE Aruba Networking documents, so you can decide what to do with the hardware you have. It is not a setup guide for VoqadoWiFi, and nothing on it means VoqadoWiFi works with Aruba Instant On.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| VoqadoWiFi status | Not supported by VoqadoWiFi yet |
| What the vendor calls the external portal | Guest portal, type External |
| How access is granted, as documented | Form post from the guest browser. After the guest signs in, the guest browser posts a small form back to the access point or router, which then opens the network. |
For VoqadoWiFi to support Instant On, the acknowledgment path would have to be proven on real Instant On hardware, including whether it works without RADIUS, because VoqadoWiFi does not run a RADIUS service. That has not been done, and there is no date.
If you are choosing hardware now, the TP-Link Omada setup guide and the Ubiquiti UniFi setup guide show exactly what VoqadoWiFi needs. If you are keeping your current hardware, its own options above work today without us.
