Choosing and Configuring Your WiFi Hardware

Your captive portal is only as good as the network behind it. Learn how to evaluate access points for compatibility, place them for maximum capture, and configure portal redirection on the major enterprise brands — Omada, UniFi, Meraki, and more.

Why Hardware Comes First

Everything you will learn in this academy — captive portals, email capture, automated campaigns — depends on one thing working reliably underneath it: your network hardware. A beautifully designed portal is worthless if guests cannot reach it, and a "free WiFi" sign that leads to a dropped connection does more brand damage than offering no WiFi at all.

The good news is that you almost certainly do not need to replace everything. Most venues already run hardware that is either compatible with external captive portals out of the box or can be made compatible with a firmware update. This lesson helps you assess what you have, understand what matters, and configure it correctly.

The One Feature That Matters Most

When evaluating access points for WiFi marketing, ignore the headline specifications — the antenna counts, the theoretical throughput numbers — and look for one capability: external captive portal support, sometimes called external portal authentication.

This is what allows your access point to redirect a guest to a hosted page — your VoqadoWiFi portal — rather than handling login internally. Placement for Capture, Not Just Coverage

Most installers place access points to eliminate dead zones. That matters, but for WiFi marketing you have a second goal: maximising the number of guests who actually connect.

  • Cover the seated areas first. Guests connect when they settle in, not when they walk past. Prioritise tables, booths, and waiting areas.
  • Avoid mounting behind metal or thick masonry. These materials absorb signal and shrink your effective capture zone.
  • Plan for overlap in multi-room venues. Every wall costs you signal, and therefore contacts. One access point rarely covers a whole venue.
  • Mount high and central. Ceiling units in the middle of a space outperform wall units in a corner almost every time.

The Guest VLAN

Never put guest traffic on the same network as your point-of-sale system, back-office computers, or payment terminals. Create a dedicated guest VLAN — a virtual network that isolates visitor devices from your business systems.

This protects you in two ways: it keeps sensitive business traffic away from untrusted guest devices, and it ensures that heavy guest usage cannot degrade the network your POS depends on. Configuring Portal Redirection

The exact steps vary by brand, but the pattern is identical everywhere:

Before you announce free WiFi, connect a real phone to the live guest SSID and complete the full flow: join, get redirected, log in, gain internet access. Do it on both an iPhone and an Android device, because captive portal behaviour differs between them. Fifteen minutes of real-device testing prevents the single most common launch failure: a portal that works in preview but never appears for guests.
