WiFi 6 vs WiFi 7 for Venues: What to Buy, What to Skip, and When to Upgrade

The Question Behind the Spec Sheets

Every venue operator eventually stands in front of this decision: the access points are due for replacement, WiFi 7 hardware is on the shelf at twice the price of WiFi 6, and the spec sheets promise numbers no phone in your dining room will ever request. What should a venue actually buy in 2026?

The honest answer requires separating what each standard changes from what your guests will ever notice, because those are very different lists. Let us do the separation properly, and end with buying advice you can act on.

What WiFi 6 Actually Changed

WiFi 6 was not primarily a speed upgrade; it was a density upgrade, and density is precisely the venue problem. Its meaningful improvements for a room full of phones:

  • OFDMA, which lets one transmission carry small parcels of data for many devices at once. A venue's traffic is mostly small parcels: messages, feed refreshes, analytics pings. This is the single most venue-relevant radio improvement of the last decade
  • Better handling of many simultaneously connected devices, the exact condition your Friday night creates
  • Target wake time, which lets phones sleep their radios longer. Guests notice nothing except their battery lasting, but idle devices also stop cluttering the air
  • WPA3 security arriving as standard equipment

The related WiFi 6E variant added the 6 GHz band: a swathe of clean spectrum with no legacy devices in it. The catch for venues: 6 GHz attenuates through walls even more readily than 5 GHz, and only recent devices can use it. Useful in dense open rooms; not a coverage tool.

What WiFi 7 Adds on Top

WiFi 7 pushes further along the same axes and adds genuinely new machinery:

  • Wider channels and higher peak rates, headline numbers achievable mostly in lab-adjacent conditions
  • Multi-link operation, MLO, letting a device use multiple bands simultaneously, smoothing latency and roaming
  • More efficient modulation, small real gains at short range on clean spectrum

Here is the venue reality check: your guests' phones set the ceiling, and phone fleets turn over slowly. In a typical 2026 dining room, the device mix spans everything sold in the last six or seven years. A large share speaks WiFi 6, a modest and growing slice speaks WiFi 7, and a stubborn tail still speaks WiFi 5. An AP negotiates with each device at the best standard both sides share, which means WiFi 7's exotic top end serves a minority of your room today, while WiFi 6's density improvements serve nearly everyone.

And the marketing layer is indifferent to all of it. The captive portal is a two-second, kilobyte-scale interaction; it ran fine on hardware two generations back. Nothing in your data capture, analytics, or automation cares which standard carried the packets. Buy radios for guest experience and longevity, not for the portal.

The Costs the Spec Sheet Hides

A WiFi 7 AP is not just a dearer box. Its appetite reaches backward into your infrastructure:

  1. Switch ports. WiFi 7 APs commonly ship with 2.5 gigabit or faster uplinks. Feed one from a gigabit switch port and you have capped it below its purpose. A real WiFi 7 rollout often becomes a switch upgrade too, and that is where the budget quietly doubles.
  2. Power. Higher-end APs draw more PoE. Check your switch's power budget before assuming six new APs will boot.
  3. The uplink truth. Your internet connection is the actual ceiling on guest experience in most venues. An AP fleet capable of multi-gigabit airtime in a venue on a 300 Mbps line is a sports car in a parking garage. Spend on the line before the radios; then apply sane bandwidth management so the line is shared fairly.

Meanwhile WiFi 6 hardware has reached its value sweet spot: mature firmware, proven density behaviour, and prices that let you buy placement density, more APs, properly positioned, which moves guest experience far more than a standard bump. Both TP-Link Omada and Ubiquiti UniFi ship solid WiFi 6 and WiFi 7 access points, and VoqadoWiFi runs identically on either generation of either platform.

The Decision Framework

Running WiFi 5 or older? Upgrade now, and WiFi 6 is the rational buy. You will feel the density improvement on the first busy service, the hardware is inexpensive, and nothing about your guests' devices rewards paying double for WiFi 7 today. Spend the difference on an extra AP and better placement.

Running WiFi 6 already? Sit tight. There is no venue-visible gain in replacing working WiFi 6 with WiFi 7 in 2026. Revisit when the hardware reaches end of life or your device mix has visibly shifted.

Building a new venue or rewiring anyway? WiFi 7 is worth a look, with eyes open. If walls are open and switching is being bought regardless, buying the current standard extends the fleet's relevance by years. Specify multi-gigabit switch ports and PoE budget to match, or you are paying for capability you have fenced off.

High-density, long-dwell venues, hotels, large lounges, event spaces, get the most from moving early. Many simultaneous active devices for hours is where WiFi 7's efficiency and MLO stop being spec-sheet poetry, and hotel refits are infrequent enough that buying the newest standard at refit time is simply good calendar maths.

The Uncomfortable Truth About Upgrades

Most venues that feel their WiFi is slow do not have a standards problem. They have one AP where three should be, a router in a cupboard behind a fridge, everything on 2.4 GHz at maximum power, or an uplink from a previous decade. A WiFi 7 purchase layered onto those mistakes buys you the same problems with brighter LEDs. Audit placement, segmentation, and the uplink first; the standards decision comes last and matters least.

And whichever radios you land on, they are the commodity half of the investment. The differentiated half is what the network captures: the guest list, the visit history, the return-visit revenue that no AP vendor ships in the box. That half starts free, one location, 25 logins a month, forever, and it works the same on the hardware you already own. Start there, and let the spec sheets wait.
