Keep a campaign learning log

Turn individual email campaigns into a useful record of decisions, evidence and next experiments.

First, the useful part

Start with the decision.

A learning log captures why a campaign existed and what the team learned. It is more useful than a gallery of screenshots or a table of opens without context. Keep the original hypothesis visible even when the results are disappointing.

Put it into practice

Three moves to make.

  1. Record the starting idea

Write the audience, offer and expected guest action before sending. State which evidence would make you repeat, revise or stop the idea.

  2. Add the actual conditions

Note timing, delivery issues, capacity changes and competing events. Record the measurements available without filling gaps with estimates presented as facts.

  3. Choose the next decision

Summarize the result in a few sentences and assign one follow-up. Preserve uncertainty where you cannot connect the campaign to a business outcome.

An illustrative example

What it could look like.

A log entry might say: “The workshop link received visits, but registration was not tracked consistently. We cannot estimate attendance attributable to this email. Next test: confirm registration tracking before repeating the invitation.” That is a useful learning result.

Before the next move

The final check.

Review several entries together to identify repeated execution problems. Do not declare a winning strategy from a single favorable number.

The detail that matters

Do not rewrite the original goal after seeing the outcome.

What should I record when a campaign underperforms?

Keep the same fields as for a strong result. Describe the evidence, the limitations and the next action without inventing an explanation.
