Welcome better / Note 09

Brief a better WiFi welcome

Give your designer a clear copy brief for the moment a guest asks to get online.

First, the useful part

Start with the decision.

The welcome has a practical job before it has a marketing job. A guest should recognize the venue, understand the next action and know where to get help. Use this brief to agree the hierarchy before choosing an image or adding another field.

Put it into practice

Three moves to make.

  1. Lead with recognition

Use the venue name guests see on the door. Explain that this is its guest WiFi welcome in a short sentence, especially if the network name differs from the trading name.

  2. Name the next action

Write a button label that describes the immediate result. Keep optional marketing copy beside its choice and separate from the instruction for connecting.

  3. Read it in context

Ask someone unfamiliar with the design to explain what happens next. Test on a phone in the venue rather than reviewing only a large desktop mockup.

An illustrative example

What it could look like.

Sample welcome: “Welcome to Sunday Coffee. Connect to our guest WiFi and make yourself at home.” Sample action: “Connect to guest WiFi.” Sunday Coffee is a fictional venue; adapt the language to your actual connection flow.

Before the next move

The final check.

The brief is ready when a new reader can identify the venue, the action and the optional choice without explanation.

The detail that matters

Do not promise instant access if the real journey has an additional verification step.

Should a WiFi welcome use a clever headline?

It can, provided the practical instruction remains clear. Put personality around the task rather than making guests decode it.
